Gardens
- Barrington Court (NT), Near Ilminster.
Barrington Court Gardens was laid out in the 1920's by the
Lyles to a design influenced by Gertrude Jekyll. Barrington Court
is a tudor manor house.
- Cothay Manor Gardens, Nr Wellington
Cothay Gardens laid out in the 1920s, surround the manor which was built in 1480 and which is said
to be the finest example of a classic medieval manor house. On either side of a two hundred yard yew walk are
"rooms", each of which are small gardens in themselves. They include a white garden, scarlet
and purple garden, herbaceous borders, a scree bed and bog garden.
- Dunster Castle Garden, Nr Minehead.
This fairytale garden is famous for its lemon tree, Arbutus, Camellias, Mimosa and
Sequoia. There are fine views of Exmoor, the Quantocks and the Bristol channel from
the terraced walks and gardens which contain a variety of sub-tropical plants.
- East Lambrook Manor (Margery Fish), Near Yeovil.
East Lambrook Manor Gardens were created by Margret Fish and are grade 1 listed.
The gardens house the National Collection of Geraniums and there is a specialist
plant nursery, teashop and art gallery.
- Forde Abbey and gardens, Near Chard.
A Cistercian monastery founded over 800 years ago and now a private house. It
is surrounded by over 30 acres of world famous gardens comprising spring bulbs,
herbaceous borders, bog garden, arboretum, lakes and working kitchen garden.
- Hestercombe (Gertrude Jekyll), Near Taunton.
Hestercombes's fifty acres of formal gardens and parkland encompass
over three centries of garden history. The formal gardens were designed
by Sir Edward Lutyens and planted by Gertrude Jekyll. The parkland comprises
a landscaped georgian pleasure garden comprising lakes, temples and garden walks.
- Rosemoor (RHS), Great Torrington, Devon.
A gardener's garden with all year round interest. It is rapidly becoming a
garden of national importance. Its special attractions include a lake, arboretum,
fruit and vegetable garden and display of 2000 roses.
- Tintinhull (NT), Near Yeovil.
A twentieth century garden created around a 17th century manor house. Small pools,
varied borders and lawns are all neatly enclosed within walls and hedges.
