Walking
Somerset provides a variety of wonderful walking opportunities.
The Quantock Hills consisting of some 38 square miles were the first to be designated an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty in England. They offer varied scenery including steep combes, heather clad hill
tops, rocky streams and ancient woodland. Walking from the following points is particularly recommended:
- Car park at Holford (GR ST154411) Hodders and Holford Combes are both very pleasant and
the views from the top of the Quantocks are magnificent.
- Car park at Cothelstone Hill (GR ST200329). There are fine views from the top of the hill
in all directions. Exmoor ponies graze the hill.
- Car park at Lydeard Hill (GR ST181338). There is a pleasant walk along the top to Will's Neck.
- Car park at Crocombe Park Gate (GT ST150378). Black Hill, a short walk from the car park, is a
good place to see the heather in flower in late August and September.
Kilve Beach (GR ST145443) and the cliff path above provide fine views across the Bristol Channel to the
islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm and to Wales beyond. The blue lias cliffs and stones on the beach are
rich in Ammonite fossils, some of which measure over a foot in diameter. Excellent cream teas can be had
near the beach.
Exmoor National Park is within 45 minutes drive including the area of Oare (Lorna Doone Country),
Selworthy National Trust Village and woods and Porlock Bay.
Locally, there are plenty of public footpaths including the River Parrett Trail and walks along
the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal including circular walks from Naunsel Lock. It is possible to park
at the lock (GR ST308298).
